A twin-engine Cessna slammed into the yard of a home in Wesley Chapel on Sunday morning, killing the pilot, sparking a fire and damaging at least one residence in the Grand Oaks subdivision near Tampa.

Pasco County officials said the aircraft went down in the 25000 block of Aldus Drive. The Federal Aviation Administration said only the pilot was aboard, and the plane had departed from Tampa North Aero Park before crashing at about 8:35 a.m. The National Transportation Safety Board identified the aircraft as a Cessna 401B/C402 and said it came down under unknown circumstances.

Pasco County Fire Rescue said the impact caused a fire that was later extinguished. Officials said at least one home sustained damage. The wreckage remained under investigation as authorities worked to document the scene and prepare the aircraft for recovery to a secure facility.

Neighbors watched the crash unfold from nearby homes, and video from a Ring camera showed smoke rising from the crash site. One resident described the shock of hearing the plane come down with children inside the house. “My kids were in the back screaming,” the resident said.

The NTSB said it dispatched an investigator to the scene and will lead the probe into what brought the aircraft down. That answer will determine whether the crash stemmed from pilot error, a mechanical problem or another issue tied to the plane’s flight path from Tampa North Aero Park into a dense suburban neighborhood.

The fatal crash also underscored the risk for communities built near small airports and other general-aviation corridors, where low-flying aircraft can come down close to homes with little warning. In Wesley Chapel, where development has spread quickly across Pasco County, the wreckage on Aldus Drive left investigators to sort through a deadly accident that turned a residential street into a crash scene in minutes.
