Princess Eugenie welcomed her third child on Monday, adding another branch to a family that already includes two young sons. Buckingham Palace said in May that Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank were expecting their third baby, due in the summer, and said King Charles had been informed and was delighted by the news.

The new arrival joins August and Ernest, the couple’s sons. In the palace announcement, August was listed as 5 and Ernest as 2, underscoring how quickly Eugenie’s family has grown while remaining largely outside the formal royal machine.

Eugenie is the daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson and the niece of King Charles. She occupies a familiar but limited place in today’s monarchy: widely recognized and still referred to as Princess Eugenie, but not among the full-time working royals who carry the daily public duties of the Crown.

The royals’ public core has narrowed over time, while Eugenie and Brooksbank have built a life that is more private and more mobile than the traditional palace model, with their time split between Britain and Portugal after Brooksbank took work there.
