Roll20 moved Map Pins out of beta on 02/26/2026 and made the feature broadly available, with Jayme Boucher, Senior Marketing Manager, writing, "Update: As of 02/26/2026, Map Pins are out of beta! We’ve added tons of functionality since Open Beta (thanks again for your feedback!); check out the Help Center for everything you need to know about Map Pins." The change-log for that same date described the feature as having "moved out of early-access" and Roll20 now lists Map Pins as available to all users, including free accounts.

The feature spent an Early Access phase restricted to paid tiers, with app copy reading, "Map Pins are here in Early Access beta for Pro and Elite subscribers!!" Community shorthand during testing often called those tiers "Pro+." Roll20 announced earlier that programmatic support arrived for higher tiers: "As of 01/15/2026, Mod Script (API) support for Map Pins is now available to Pro and Elite users!" Free and Plus users were told they could preview Map Pins "in any game created by a Pro or Elite GM" during the beta.

Map Pins attach journal handouts directly to locations on the virtual tabletop. The published quick start steps are explicit: "Drag a handout from the journal to the map," then "Set your visibility and customize your display + text," and finally "Double-click a placed pin to open a linked handout." Roll20 preserved in-product labels so GMs will see controls such as "Drag to add Pin to Board" and "Copy Header Link," and the blog notes, "We’ve deemphasized inline pin controls to keep handouts readable and minimize visual clutter. 'Drag to add Pin to Board' and 'Copy Header Link' only appear on hover (or tap on mobile)." A "Go to Pin" icon is available as a static indicator only when a pin is linked, summarized precisely: "'Go to Pin' appears as a static icon only when a pin is linked."

Small-screen and tooltip behavior received targeted UI work during the Open Beta cycle. Roll20 states, "We’ve expanded tooltip display functionality and improved readability, meaning no more cramped or cut-off information in-game," and documents three specific tooltip improvements: "A more responsive layout stays readable when viewed on smaller screens"; "Tooltips show more text and now include scrollbars"; and "There are separate tabs for Player Notes and GM Notes." For groups that prefer persistent controls, the company preserved a setting path: "All can be changed to always display in VTT Settings > Accessibility > Show Pin Controls in Handouts."

Roll20 asked testers to continue reporting issues as the feature rolls into general availability. The blog and help center reiterate channels for feedback and bug reports: "Report any issues that arise during your games so our team can address them, and let us know if you have specific thoughts about the direction you’d like to see Map Pins continue to develop (outside of the list above). Feel free to share on our Forums, on social (X/Twitter, Bluesky, Instagram), or in our Discord Server." The FAQ entry addresses access and future subscriber-only features: "Yes! All users (including free) will have access to Map Pins when they come out of beta. We may release advanced features requested by subscribers in the future, but that information isn’t available at this time." With Mod Script support already in place for Pro and Elite accounts and public availability established as of 02/26/2026, Roll20 has signaled that Map Pins will be a standard part of VTT workflows while it iterates additional capabilities.
