SailGP Executes Massive In-Season Black Foils F50 Hull Repair, Lessons for Teams
SailGP Technologies is carrying out one of its largest in-season composite repairs after a high-speed Perth collision badly damaged the New Zealand Black Foils F50; the intact core structure made repair possible.

SailGP Technologies is undertaking one of its largest in-season composite repairs after a high-speed collision at the recent Perth event badly damaged the New Zealand Black Foils F50. Initial inspections and non-destructive testing showed the F50’s critical structure remained intact, allowing the league to repair rather than replace the entire platform and target a return for the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Auckland on 14–15 February 2026.
The impact caused catastrophic damage to the left-side hull of the Kiwi boat, Sailweb reported, and “the damage extends to the bulkhead, however, making this one of the most substantial in-season composite repairs ever undertaken by the league,” SailGP said. Sailweb described the bulkhead as a key structural partition within the hull and said it was badly damaged, which is why an entirely new section of hull, including a new bulkhead section, must be fabricated.
Sailweb recorded the league’s assessment that “Initial inspections and non-destructive testing revealed the F50’s critical structure remained intact, allowing SailGP Technologies to carry out a repair rather than replacing the entire platform.” That inspection outcome determined the repair path: multiple specialist teams at SailGP’s Centre of Innovation, Design and Engineering in Southampton, UK are manufacturing an entirely new section of hull plus deck, stern and steering components. “The bulkhead, a key structural partition within the hull, was badly damaged, requiring an entirely new section of hull to be manufactured at SailGP’s state-of-the-art centre of innovation, design and engineering in Southampton UK, before being flown to New Zealand,” Sailweb reported.
Sailweb also noted that “Multiple specialist teams are now manufacturing new hull, deck, stern and steering components that will be bonded into the existing platform.” A specialist team from SailGP Technologies has been working around the clock on the rebuild, described as a battle with the clock to have the Black Foils ready for their home event. Sailweb recorded the league’s confidence that, “While this is a major technical challenge, the team is confident that all is going to plan, and the Black Foils will be back on the startline at their home event in Auckland next month.”
The collision involved the Swiss team at Perth, and the Black Foils crew includes Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. SailGP is planning logistics to air-freight the fabricated sections to New Zealand, bond them into the existing platform, and complete whatever inspection and testing regime is required before returning to racing. The next circuit stop after Auckland is the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix on 28 February–1 March 2026.
For repair teams and yard managers, this episode underscores the value of thorough non-destructive testing to validate repair over replacement, prepositioned design and manufacturing capability, and fast air-logistics for time-critical race repairs. Key technical details remain to be released, exact collision timing, adhesive and cure regimes, headcount and person-hours, and the sea-trial and certification plan, so monitor SailGP Technologies for updates as the rebuild proceeds.
