Suspect in custody after two stabbed in Manhattan's Upper West Side

Two people were stabbed in broad daylight on Manhattan's Upper West Side, and a possible suspect was in custody as police investigated the attack in one of the borough's most densely residential neighborhoods. The case added to a string of knife violence that has repeatedly surfaced on the Upper West Side in bars, on buses and on neighborhood streets.

The area has seen other serious stabbings in recent years. In March 2019, two men were stabbed inside Dive 75 on the Upper West Side, and the suspect was in custody. In June 2026, a 74-year-old man was injured in a separate Upper West Side bus stabbing. Those incidents, taken together, have kept the neighborhood in the public eye whenever another blade attack occurs there.

Manhattan has also seen more severe stabbing cases beyond the Upper West Side. In November 2024, Ramon Rivera was taken into custody after an apparent unprovoked stabbing spree that left three people dead, and the mayor said Rivera was believed to have severe mental health challenges. Another Upper West Side case involved a man who was stabbed after confronting a group of men who had broken into a neighbor's apartment.

The latest daylight attack is likely to renew concern among residents of the Upper West Side, where a busy residential streetscape has not insulated the neighborhood from violent crime. With a suspect already in custody, the focus now falls on the victims, the motive and whether prosecutors will bring charges tied to one more stabbing in a part of Manhattan that has repeatedly become the setting for them.
