Teen Girl Killed, Another Wounded in Piedmont Park Shooting

A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed at Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta on Saturday night, and a 15-year-old was wounded in what investigators described as violence that erupted during an unpermitted gathering on the park's west side.

Atlanta Police Department officers were dispatched just after 9 p.m. following reports of gunfire. They found the 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to the shoulder; she was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. The 16-year-old, whose injuries were more severe, died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.

Homicide detectives took over the investigation after the scene was secured. APD said the shooting had no connection to a permitted celebratory event that had wrapped up on the opposite side of the park at approximately 7:45 p.m. The violence instead appeared to originate from an unpermitted gathering that formed near the park's far west end in the hours that followed. Saturday was April 4, widely observed in Atlanta as "404 Day" after the city's primary area code, an occasion that routinely draws large crowds to Midtown's public spaces.

Witnesses described widespread confusion as people fled the area while officers worked to secure the scene. No arrests had been announced in the immediate aftermath, and investigators were searching for surveillance footage and working to identify suspects.

At a late-night briefing, an APD spokesperson made a direct appeal to the many bystanders who were present: "There were a large number of people here, so if you saw anything, please make sure you contact us and let us know." Cellphone video was described as critical to reconstructing exactly how the shooting unfolded.
