Two Teens Arrested in Western Addition Triple Shooting That Killed Jayda Mabrey
Two juveniles were arrested after a Jan. 30 Western Addition shooting that killed 15-year-old Jayda Mabrey and wounded two other teens; the case raises questions about public safety and juvenile justice in San Francisco.

San Francisco police arrested two male juveniles, ages 15 and 16, after a triple shooting near the intersection of Golden Gate Avenue and Laguna Street that left a 15-year-old girl dead and two other teenagers wounded. The department said investigators developed probable cause on February 2 and moved to take the suspects into custody.
SFPD said, “On February 2, 2026, investigators developed probable cause to arrest a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old suspect for the shooting.” The department added, “Both suspects were booked into the Juvenile Justice Center for homicide. Due to the suspects' ages, their identities will not be released.” Officials have not released details about any motive and the investigation remains active.
Family members identified the deceased as Jayda Mabrey, a 15-year-old student at Gateway High School. Relatives and an online fundraiser describe Jayda as a bright student and community member; the GoFundMe posted, “Jayda was a bright, fun-loving young girl who meant everything to those who knew her,” and “She was a beloved daughter, sister, friend, and so much more. Her smile, laughter, and kind spirit touched so many lives, and her absence has left an unimaginable void.” Family members also said Jayda’s younger sister witnessed the shooting and was not injured.
Police responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 5:10 p.m. on Jan. 30. Accounts vary by two minutes, with one report listing 5:13 p.m. and another 5:15 p.m., but all place the shooting in the same block near the Margaret S. Hayward Playground just south of Jefferson Square Park in the Western Addition. Officers found three victims, “three shooting victims under the age of 18,” and the two surviving teenagers were hospitalized; police said the two other victims “were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.”

Both juveniles were booked into the Juvenile Justice Center on homicide-related charges. Because they are minors, their names have not been released and court filings will determine whether the San Francisco public defender system and the district attorney pursue charges in juvenile or adult court. That decision will have consequences for how the case proceeds and for transparency around records and hearings.
The arrests bring immediate relief but also renewed attention to policy questions that animate local politics: public safety resources in neighborhoods near parks and playgrounds, juvenile prosecution standards, and whether prevention and youth services are adequately funded in city budgets. Community leaders and elected officials will face pressure to explain how investments in violence prevention and policing intersect and what steps will reduce the likelihood of bystanders being harmed.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward. “Call the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444, or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the message with ‘SFPD.’ Tipsters can remain anonymous.” Meanwhile neighbors held a vigil and a fundraiser has begun to support Jayda’s family. As the investigation continues, residents should expect updates on formal charges, any court filings, and whether additional suspects are sought.
