Wildfires near Bordeaux force mass evacuations as heat intensifies

Wildfires forced evacuations outside Bordeaux on Saturday as wind drove flames toward one of France’s most important wine regions and hotter weather loomed over a fire-strained summer. French authorities sent a massive cargo aircraft to dump flame retardants on the blaze, while crews worked to keep it from spreading deeper into Gironde.

At least 10,000 residents had fled the Bordeaux-area fires at an earlier stage, and the wider emergency had already displaced more than 200,000 people from homes in France and Spain. Firefighters in south-west France struggled to contain the blazes as strong winds pushed the flames toward Bordeaux, adding pressure to crews already stretched across the region.

The danger was not limited to one front. A separate fire near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport killed two firefighters earlier in the week, a stark reminder of how lethal the season had become even before the latest evacuations. France and Spain have both faced repeated heat waves, very dry conditions and wind that has helped turn local fires into cross-border emergencies.

Bordeaux’s vulnerability carries economic weight as well as human cost. The city sits at the center of French wine country, and officials have repeatedly treated the surrounding vineyards and suburbs as high-value territory to defend. In 2022, wildfires in southwestern France forced thousands to evacuate during a new heat wave; a large blaze southeast of Bordeaux destroyed about 7,400 hectares and drove 10,000 residents from their homes. Another fire burned more than 30,000 hectares and led to nearly 170,000 evacuations, while German firefighters joined the response.

As the latest fire moved through the region, it exposed the same limits France confronted in 2022: rapid wind shifts, drying heat and the need to pull in large-scale air and ground support before the flames reached denser neighborhoods and vineyards around Bordeaux.
