HILT 2026 brings triathlon-style longsword tournament to West Virginia

HILT 2026 is set for Saturday, August 8 in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and the draw is the format: the Historical Integrated Longsword Tournament is being billed as a triathlon-style event that pushes beyond a single elimination bracket. Registration is live, and the current lineup includes an open steel longsword tournament and a padded boffer longsword tournament, giving the day a broader competitive range than a standard one-weapon meet.

The event’s home at the Shepherd University Wellness Center gives HILT a clear regional anchor in the Mid-Atlantic HEMA circuit. For fighters who travel for tournaments, the one-day setup matters as much as the rule mix: it points to a compact stop that can fit around club schedules while still asking for more than raw bracket skill. The triathlon label also signals a different value proposition. Instead of rewarding only the best pool record or the cleanest single run through direct elimination, HILT is built to test whether a fencer can shift between fencing formats and still stay sharp.

That approach is not coming out of nowhere. HEMA Scorecard lists HILT - Historical Integrated Longsword Triathlon 2025 for August 16, 2025 in Lovettsville, Virginia, and Sigi Forge identified that first edition as the inaugural event hosted by Fenris KDF. The 2025 program included Open, URG and Youth Longsword fencing, Paired Forms and Cutting, with prizes for individual winners and an overall Triathlon Champion trophy. In other words, HILT was already set up as more than a bracket from the start.

That spread suggests a competitive regional mix, with clubs from different areas capable of showing up and fighting for placement when the event rewards depth as well as sharpness.

For HEMA, that is the real stakes of HILT’s return to Shepherdstown. A triathlon-style longsword tournament combines live fencing, cutting and additional weapon work into one package, which rewards fighters who can stay disciplined across changing demands. If the 2026 edition lands the way the 2025 inaugural did, it will not just offer another bracket day. It will give other organizers a working model for how to make an event feel broader, tougher and more worth the travel.
