Placencia wins Sword and Buckler Open Steel as Mordhau dominates podium

Robert Placencia won Sword and Buckler - Open Steel at MordMini XIII 2026, holding off a Mordhau Historical Combat cluster that took the next three places in an 11-fencer bracket. Zach Harney finished second, Piper Maerker third and Corey Heath fourth, a compact result sheet that left little room for error and even less room for surprise once the top names settled in.

The shape of the bracket is the story here. Mordhau Historical Combat put three fencers into the top four and added John Durben, Devin Bizzack, Curt Sapp, Jacob Chamberlain and Kari Baker farther down the standings, a spread that points to depth rather than one isolated run. In a weapon set built on hand protection, timing at close range and quick shifts from defense to attack, that kind of concentration matters more than it would in a looser field. Placencia still cut through it and took gold for Ironwood Historic Swordsmanship, which made the win stand out even more sharply.

Ironwood’s own post framed the result as the capstone to its last MordMini Tournament before Cactus Cup, and the club said Placencia shared the medal podium with them as “Ironwood swept all three medals for sword and buckler.” That line captures the tension inside the division: Ironwood claimed the title, but Mordhau controlled most of the elite bracket positions behind it. In a smaller event like this one, the difference between first and fourth can come down to a single exchange, and the final order showed that the better-prepared school structure still had real weight.

Placencia’s win also fits a wider pattern in his results. He finished second in MordMini IX 2025 longsword behind Mordhau’s Anthony Julin, was runner-up again in MordMini VIII - Dussack 2024 behind Mordhau’s Isaac Benzing, and won Smallsword - Tier 2 Open Steel at Fright Fight 2025. That record makes him look less like a one-weapon specialist and more like a fencer who keeps showing up in different formats and keeps finding the podium.

Ironwood Historical Swordsmanship is based in Tucson, Arizona, and its class schedule lists Monday and Wednesday evening training from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Dan Felix Memorial Park, 5790 N Camino De La Tierra. That home base now has another clean result to point to: Placencia stopped a Mordhau sweep from turning into a complete takeover and gave Ironwood the division’s top line in one of the tightest brackets of the MordMini set.
