Delta defeats Jay County 58-49, advances; Barnes 25, Barr breaks record
Delta beat Jay County 58-49 as Addison Barnes scored 25 and Jillian Barr poured in 18 after halftime to break the school scoring record and send the Eagles to the Sectional final.

Delta advanced to the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 24 championship with a 58-49 semifinal victory over Jay County at Yorktown, powered by a 25-point performance from Addison Barnes and a late surge from senior center Jillian Barr that rewrote the school record book.
Barnes led the Eagles offensively all night, finishing with 25 points and creating opportunities in the halfcourt sets. Barr finished with 18 points, all coming after halftime, and completed a dramatic career milestone. Barr tied Niki Steveson’s long-standing Delta record of 1,408 career points on a made post shot midway through the fourth quarter and then converted the ensuing free throw to become the program’s all-time leader at 1,409 career points. The three-point play extended Delta’s lead and, according to one account, put the Eagles up by 10 with 3:31 remaining in the game.
Barr’s night was a study in turning adversity into impact. She was 0-for-5 with four turnovers over the game’s first 15 minutes, and her only first-half scoring came on a buzzer-beating post shot after a power dribble that gave Delta a 22-20 halftime edge. When Delta chose to go bigger in the second half, involving Barr more as the interior focal point, the strategy paid dividends on both ends of the floor.

“I’ve been working hard all four seasons of high school,” Barr said. “I’ve been coming close to God and knowing he would get me through anything. I was stressed a little bit when we were down in the first half, but I knew just to relax, trust God and go through the whole process. … It feels amazing to accomplish this and my team is all happy for me.”
Coach Ty’Ronda Benning credited depth and in-game adjustments for Delta’s second-half control. “We’re blessed because we don’t have a small team,” Benning said. “Any given night, anyone who’s playing well is going to play for me. Ja’Niyah stepped up tonight. She played really well and really aggressive so she played big minutes tonight.”
Ja’Niyah Johnson, who saw the majority of second-half minutes alongside Barr, contributed seven points and helped the Eagles secure a 50-47 advantage on the glass. Sources say Barr and Johnson combined for 22 rebounds, and a separate caption noted two players grabbed 10 boards apiece, underscoring Delta’s physical presence inside.

Jay County received big nights from sisters Hallie and Karsyn Schwieterman. Hallie led the Patriots with 23 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Karsyn finished with 20 points. Despite the scoring punch, Jay County’s offense stalled at key moments and Delta’s interior play closed out the game.
The victory puts Delta into the Sectional 24 title game at Yorktown and cements Barr’s place in Eagles history, knocking down a record that stood since 1992. For Delta, the result is both validation of a midseason lineup adjustment and a cultural moment for the program as Barr’s milestone highlights the visibility and competitiveness of girls basketball in the region. Fans can expect Delta to lean on its size and Barr-Barnes tandem as it seeks the sectional crown.
