Ball State kept one of Indiana’s All-Stars in state on Friday, landing Fishers senior Kai McGrew and giving new coach Chris Capko an immediate recruiting win. For a program trying to build early momentum under a first-year staff, McGrew is the kind of name that matters: a proven Indiana senior from one of the state’s most visible high school programs.

McGrew arrives in Muncie with a résumé that goes well beyond size. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shots at Fishers, production that shows a player who affected games in every phase. He was more than a finisher around the rim, handling the ball, making reads and contributing defensively in a way that helped him earn Indiana All-Star recognition.

That versatility is what makes the fit so clean for Ball State. Capko was hired as the Cardinals’ 21st head men’s basketball coach on March 20 and introduced on March 24, and McGrew’s commitment gives the new staff a foundational in-state piece before summer recruiting heats up. For Ball State, keeping a player like McGrew home sends a clear message to future Indiana prospects that a mid-major program in the state can still land one of the best seniors on the board.

McGrew’s path to Fishers adds even more weight to the commitment. He transferred from Lawrence North before his senior season, was initially ruled to have limited eligibility by the IHSAA in July 2025, then won full athletic eligibility on appeal in October. That decision allowed him to complete the season at Fishers, where he remained one of the state’s most watched frontcourt players.

The timing also gives the commitment added visibility. The 2026 Indiana boys All-Stars were scheduled to play Kentucky on June 5 and June 6, putting McGrew on a bigger stage just months before he heads to college. Prep Hoops lists him as a 2026-class power forward and notes that he plays club basketball for Indiana Elite 3SSB, another sign that Ball State secured a player with a long track record and a statewide profile.

For Fishers, McGrew’s decision is another marker of how the program continues to produce recognizable next-level talent. For Ball State, it is an early recruiting statement from Capko, one built on keeping an Indiana All-Star close to home and turning that local name into a frontcourt cornerstone.
