Luke Ertel's Mr. Basketball case was built across an entire season, but it crystallized in the final two weekends of it. The 6-foot-2 Mt. Vernon (Fortville) senior collected 207 of 230 votes from Indiana's coaches and media, a near-unanimous verdict announced April 9 by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and All-Star game director Mike Broughton. Ertel finished 201 votes ahead of runner-up Dikembe Shaw of Crown Point, who received six, in a ballot that reflected not just what Ertel did statistically but how he performed when the stakes were highest.

In the Class 4A state championship game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Ertel posted 26 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists in Mt. Vernon's 52-50 comeback win over Crown Point, delivering the program its first state title in boys basketball history. It was the kind of complete line that makes ballot decisions easy: a senior who scored, rebounded and facilitated simultaneously on the biggest stage in Indiana high school basketball.

The semifinal weekend at New Castle Fieldhouse provided an equally sharp illustration of Ertel's value. He opened that Saturday with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 66-46 quarterfinal win over Decatur Central. In the nightcap against New Albany, he picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter with Mt. Vernon leading by 14, and the Marauders watched that lead evaporate to four during the roughly two-and-a-half minutes he sat on the bench. When Ertel returned, he built a triple-double, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 77-69 win that sent Mt. Vernon to its first championship game.

Those tournament moments reflected a season-long profile that left voters with little to debate. Ertel averaged 24.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 47.9 percent from the field as the Marauders finished 28-3. The Gatorade Indiana Boys Basketball Player of the Year honor had already confirmed his standing before the Mr. Basketball ballot even closed in early April.

Coach Joe Bradburn, who guided Ertel through three seasons at Mt. Vernon, reached for historical company when describing him. Bradburn invoked Scott Skiles for hitting pressure shots, Damon Bailey for raising teammates to win a championship, and Steve Alford for doing everything at a high level night after night. "He's done everything possible to prepare himself for this day," Bradburn said. "His family support, his work ethic and his dedication and his commitment to everything has been phenomenal. I'm proud that he's part of our program and he reflects our program and reflects our community."

Ertel is the first Mr. Basketball winner from Mt. Vernon and the 14th Purdue commit to claim the honor, joining a lineage that includes Braden Smith in 2022 and Caleb Furst in 2021. As the award recipient, he will wear the No. 1 jersey for the Indiana All-Stars in their annual series against Kentucky this summer. Purdue's program ranks seventh nationally in the 247Sports recruiting rankings for its incoming class, and Ertel arrives in West Lafayette as the centerpiece of that group, carrying a state title and the state's top individual honor with him.
