Mack Welker named SAC boys basketball Player of the Year at Homestead
Mack Welker’s Player of the Year honor showed Homestead owns the SAC’s most dangerous returning star, even as South Side claimed the league title on tiebreakers.

The Summit Athletic Conference’s award list made the league’s balance clear, but the season’s biggest individual prize still pointed straight to Homestead. Mack Welker, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, was named SAC boys Player of the Year after a 2025-26 run that made him the player every contender had to account for.
Welker’s production backed up the selection. He averaged 20.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game for a Homestead team that finished 20-7 and won a Class 4A sectional title. He was one of only two players in the area to average a double-double, a rare statistical line that matched the reputation he carried all season as one of Indiana’s premier juniors.
The award also says something about the SAC’s competitive order. South Side won the conference on tiebreakers with a 7-2 record, a reminder that the league had no shortage of contenders. But Homestead delivered the most memorable head-to-head result, beating South Side 67-59 on Jan. 9 before later eliminating the Archers again in the sectional semifinals on the way to a semistate appearance. In a league defined by tight margins, Welker gave Homestead the most reliable edge.

That combination of production and postseason influence is why Welker’s name has traveled well beyond the conference. He was named to the 2026 Indiana boys’ Junior All-Stars on April 1, and the June 3 games are set for Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville. He also entered the season as Outside the Huddle’s No. 1 player in its preseason Top 50 countdown, with Homestead coach Chris Johnson calling him a “big time player” who can play multiple positions and stretch the defense with his shooting ability.
Welker’s own words fit the résumé. He described himself as “a three-level scorer who defends and plays at a high level,” and the numbers bore that out across an entire winter, not just one hot stretch. That is what makes the SAC honor matter beyond the trophy case: Homestead has the conference’s most impactful returning star, and next season’s league race will almost certainly run through him again.
