Mt. Vernon Tops Pike 57-54 in Overtime, Ertel Drops 34 to Claim Regional Title
Luke Ertel hit two clutch free throws with 12.4 seconds left to force OT, then scored 8 of Mt. Vernon's 9 overtime points in a 57-54 regional title win.

Luke Ertel walked off the Southport Fieldhouse floor Saturday with scratches up and down his arms, neck and side of his face, and 34 points on the scoreboard. That about sums up what it took for Mt. Vernon to outlast Pike 57-54 in overtime and claim the Class 4A Regional 5 championship.
The Purdue-bound senior point guard was the story from start to finish in front of a near-packed crowd at the 7,000-plus seat Southport Fieldhouse. Ertel iced the game-tying free throws with 12.4 seconds left in regulation, then came back and scored eight of Mt. Vernon's nine overtime points to finish the job. The Marauders improve to 25-3 and advance to next week's Class 4A South Semi-State. Pike falls to 23-4.
The win gives Mt. Vernon its second straight regional championship and fifth in program history, while the school-record 25th victory of the season reflects just how far this group has come.
The game was a rematch with real stakes attached. Pike had won the regular-season meeting between these two programs in overtime, and No. 3 Pike looked ready to do it again on Saturday. Mt. Vernon led by 11 early in the second quarter before Pike flipped the script, taking a six-point lead in the third quarter and still holding a five-point cushion with 5:50 remaining in regulation.
That's when senior Jamaree Collins stepped into the moment. With 3:27 left, Collins buried a baseline 3-pointer that cut Pike's lead to 45-44. It was his only made shot of the night, and it cracked open a game that had been slipping away.
"That was monumental," head coach Joe Bradburn said. "It was late in the game and we needed a burst of energy, some momentum."
Collins had been struggling all night. He missed two 3-pointers in the first half and another after halftime before finally connecting. "I just stayed confident in my shot, and I hit it," he said. "It was an amazing moment. The whole gym erupted. I couldn't hear anything."
Mt. Vernon still trailed 48-46 with the clock winding down when Ertel got fouled with 12.4 seconds left. He made both free throws to force overtime. From there, it was Ertel's game. The 6'3" point guard, considered a frontrunner for Indiana Mr. Basketball, put up eight of the team's nine overtime points as Mt. Vernon outscored Pike 9-6 in the extra period to close out the 57-54 victory.
"It was the most physical game I've ever played in," Ertel said.
Bradburn, asked to put Ertel's performance into words after the final buzzer, didn't even try. "I don't know how to explain Luke," he said.
Mt. Vernon now turns its attention to the Class 4A South Semi-State, where Ertel, still adding to what is shaping up as a signature senior season, will look to keep the Marauders' postseason run alive before heading to Purdue.
