Christian Park Family Center on Indianapolis' east side now has a full set of upgraded basketball infrastructure: new court markings and playing lines, contemporary rims and backboard padding, a renovated fitness room, and a dedicated children's playroom, all delivered Wednesday through the NCAA Final Four Legacy Project.

The improvements were dedicated April 2 during Final Four week in Indianapolis, with NCAA President Charlie Baker attending the ceremony in person and speaking directly to the children and families gathered at the center. Baker put the physical space at the center of his remarks: "There is nothing quite like the echo in a gymnasium, because it's where an enormous amount of the energy and the excitement that comes with being part of whatever is going on in here." Baker also noted the NCAA has completed roughly 30 court renovations over the past 15 years through the Legacy Project, placing Christian Park among three dozen community facilities nationally to receive this category of investment.

The facility upgrades are immediately relevant to east side youth basketball development. Better rims, padded walls, and clearly marked playing lines are the baseline infrastructure that separates organized skill-building from unstructured pickup play, and Christian Park is the kind of neighborhood hub that feeds players into area middle and high school programs before they ever reach an IHSAA varsity court.

Indy Parks Director Brittany Crone placed the renovation inside a larger operational picture. "They serve as hubs for the neighborhood," Crone said of Indianapolis family centers. "They are places where people can learn, connect and find support." Christian Park already runs after-school programming alongside a food pantry and clothing distribution, and Crone framed the physical upgrades as reinforcing that full-service model.

A mural honoring Jim Morris was added to the facility as part of a Jim Morris Day of Service held before the ceremony, giving the space a visual connection to local athletic history. Students from Christian Park Elementary attended the dedication and were named as the intended long-term beneficiaries of the renovation.

The project was backed by Indiana Sports Corp. and Dove Men+Care as named partners. Indy Parks will manage ongoing programming and scheduling at the center, with the upgraded gym now open to the public. For youth coaches working the east side circuit, the facility is no longer a fallback option.
