Homestead rode a twin scoring punch to hand Class 2A No. 1 Oak Hill its first loss of the season, a finish that underlined both Oak Hill’s resilience and the dangers of a relentless, control-oriented attack. Homestead (13-5) got 24 points from 6-1 junior guard Jake Coolman and 23 from 6-6 junior Mack Welker in a game that tightened dramatically down the stretch. The Indianapolis Star wrote, "Homestead held on. Barely."

The setting only amplified the drama. The game was played in Oak Hill’s 1960 retro gym in Converse, a site the IndyStar hailed as "Great place to play basketball." There is a sign above the student section at the 1960 retro gym at Oak Hill that reads "Eagles’ Nest." The paper added, "It should probably read 'Hornets’ Nest.'" The pregame light show is especially delightful, and "once the game starts, Class 2A No. 1 Oak Hill can make its home gym an inhospitable location for visiting teams," the feature noted.

Oak Hill entered the night 15-1 and nearly completed a comeback after Homestead built as large as a nine-point third-quarter lead. Oak Hill’s undersized Golden Eagles clawed back to tie the game 51-51 with a little more than two minutes remaining, forcing a tense finish. Renbarger reflected on the late rally and the team’s character: "If there’s an area where I’m really proud of the kids it’s that we got down as much as nine against a team that plays ball control and is not going to turn the basketball over and for us to back to 51-51 with a shot to take the lead says a lot about the resolve of our kids," Renbarger said. "I’m really pleased with their resolve. They showed me who they are as far as their competitive spirit."

Oak Hill’s seasonal production shows why the program has been atop Class 2A. The Indianapolis Star lists Jace Tonagel as averaging a team-high "15.3 points, 5.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game." The same feature lists "Will" at 14.1 points, 3.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game, with senior R.J. Shugart at 10.9 points per game and juniors Jayden Younce (6.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and Kevaunte Simmons (8.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg) also cited as major contributors. Oak Hill appears in the IHSAA Class 2A listing alongside Eastern (Greentown), Lewis Cass, Manchester, Rochester Community and Wabash in group 38.

For fans tracking the late-season pecking order, the result is consequential. Homestead earned a marquee resume win and validated the ball-control attack Renbarger described, while Oak Hill’s comeback bid reinforced the Hornets’, and Eagles’, ability to grind through pressure. With IHSAA Class 2A play approaching, both rosters will be measured on how they respond: Homestead looking to build momentum and Oak Hill looking to convert resilience into the next stretch of wins.
