Luke Ertel poured in 22 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and dished 11 assists to record a triple-double and break Mt. Vernon (Fortville)’s career scoring record in a 69-50 victory over Hamilton Southeastern at Mt. Vernon High School. The performance not only fueled a 19-point win but pushed Ertel’s career total to 1,397 points, eclipsing Tim Miller’s 1,390 mark set in 1998, as noted by Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star.

Ertel’s night was efficient and varied. He hit three 3-pointers, made all five of his free-throw attempts and scored 11 points in each half. Mt. Vernon’s second quarter was decisive; the Marauders scored 17 points, with 15 of those coming on five three-pointers - two from Ertel, two from Guerre and one from Meyer - a run that swung momentum and opened the lead. Hamilton Southeastern got balanced scoring from 10 different players but no double-figure efforts, with Varschon Clark leading the visitors with nine points.

This marked Ertel’s second triple-double of the season. His other came in the Hall of Fame Classic championship game in New Castle, a 60-56 loss to No. 2 Crown Point, when he posted 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Through 16 games this season, Ertel is averaging 25.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game, a level of production that has Mt. Vernon sitting at 14-2 overall and 4-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. With nine regular-season games remaining, the Marauders were slated to travel to New Castle for a conference test.

The game underlined why college programs have chased Ertel. The Purdue signee combines perimeter shooting, playmaking and uncommon rebounding for a guard; On3 noted Ertel was roughly a 50-percent three-point shooter in adidas 3SSB play with Indiana Elite this summer and praised his two-way productivity. Ertel has spoken about fit at Purdue, saying, “Coach Painter’s an awesome coach, and he values a lot of the stuff (I do) that some coaches don’t see.” Recruiting services have elevated Ertel from a three-star at the time of his commitment to a top-50 prospect on some lists, and his camp and tournament résumé includes tournament-leading scoring outputs and a Homestead Holiday Hoops Tournament title.

Mt. Vernon’s showing also carried weight in the polls. The program is ranked No. 7 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll across classifications and No. 4 in the USA Today Class 4A rankings, and Ertel is being mentioned among favorites for Indiana’s Mr. Basketball as his senior campaign unfolds.

For local fans and college scouts, the game reinforced Ertel’s all-around ceiling and Mt. Vernon’s status as a conference frontrunner. The immediate next step is a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup at New Castle and a run through nine remaining regular-season games that will shape postseason seeding and individual award races.
