Ron Nored Returns to Indiana, Named Butler's Next Head Basketball Coach
Ron Nored, once head coach at Brownsburg High School, returns to Indiana as Butler's next head coach after NBA stints with three franchises.

Ron Nored came to Butler as a point guard who never stopped defending. He left as a two-time national finalist, a co-captain, and the school's Most Outstanding Male Athlete. Now he's back, and Indiana high school basketball should pay close attention.
Butler University named Nored its next head men's basketball coach on March 25, succeeding Thad Matta, who retired after leading the program into the Big East era. The hire reconnects the Bulldogs with a figure who spent formative years coaching deep inside Indiana's prep ranks, most notably as head coach at Brownsburg High School immediately after his 2012 graduation.
That Brownsburg stop matters. Nored wasn't just passing through the Indiana high school ecosystem on his way to bigger things; he was embedded in it, learning how to recruit and develop players at the grassroots level before embarking on a 14-year professional coaching climb. That climb ran through the G League, including a head coaching stint with the Long Island Nets from 2016 to 2018, then through three NBA assistant jobs: Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2021, the Indiana Pacers from 2021 to 2023, and most recently three seasons with the Atlanta Hawks.
Athletic director Grant Leiendecker framed the hire in unambiguous terms. "Ron is a relentless worker with an elite basketball IQ and a proven track record of developing talent at the highest level of basketball," Leiendecker said. "He is the ultimate competitor, and he will cultivate that same quality within his team and staff."
Nored's own statement matched the weight of the moment. "The term 'dream job' doesn't do justice to how I feel about the opportunity to lead the Butler program," he said. "Butler is an incredibly special place. As a player, I poured blood, sweat and tears into this program. No one appreciates both the responsibility and the potential that comes with this position more than me."

For Indiana high school coaches and prospects, the practical implications are immediate. Nored's presence gives the Bulldogs a head coach with actual prep coaching experience in the state, a face familiar to club programs and AAU circuits across the Midwest, and a professional development pedigree that stands out at any level of college basketball. Butler enters the 2026-27 season expecting at least $9 million in revenue sharing and NIL funding, positioning the program to compete more aggressively for top in-state talent at IHSAA sectionals, regionals, and the state finals.
Nored played his college ball under Brad Stevens, the architect of Butler's back-to-back national championship game runs in 2010 and 2011. He helped build those runs as a lockdown defensive guard, then left campus as co-captain with the school's most prestigious individual athletic honor. He understood the program's culture before he ever drew up a play.
The Bulldogs are betting that the player who helped define the Butler Way is the right coach to reclaim it.
