Westview Tops Bishop Luers 69-48, Advances to Class 2A Title Game

Westview needed two wins to punch its ticket to the Class 2A state championship. The Warriors got both of them Saturday, and it wasn't close in the one that mattered most.

The Topeka-based Warriors knocked out Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 69-48 at the Muncie Central semistate site on March 21, capping a demanding double-dip that began with a 65-62 semifinal grind against Lapel earlier the same day. The 21-point margin in the final was decisive enough to erase any drama left over from the noon game, and Westview now advances to face Parke Heritage in the IHSAA Class 2A state championship on March 28.

Bishop Luers had entered the semistate with legitimate momentum. Under coach Seth Coffing, the Knights beat Bremen 55-51 on March 14 to claim the program's first regional title since 2017, then knocked off No. 2-ranked Oak Hill to reach the semistate final. Coming in at 15-11 overall, Luers was a team peaking at the right moment. Westview, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A and carrying a 24-1 record into the tournament, had a different answer.

The Warriors' road to Muncie traced back through a sectional blowout of Lakeland 66-43 and a regional nail-biter against Gary 21st Century, which Westview survived 63-59 on March 14 at North Judson-San Pierre. Nothing came easy in the bracket, which makes the 21-point statement against Luers in the semistate final all the more notable.

The win over Lapel, a No. 9-seeded team that pushed Westview to the final possession in a 65-62 game, showed the Warriors can win ugly. The win over Bishop Luers showed they can dominate when the stakes are highest. That combination is exactly what a state title run requires.

Westview and Parke Heritage meet March 28 for the Class 2A championship. The Warriors are one win away.
