When the PPA released the MB Hanoi Cup brackets on March 26, the seedings told a story that made the quarterfinal rounds look more consequential than the final itself. A bracket breakdown published by Pickleball News Asia identified specific sections of the draw where top-tier matchups are set to collide well before the semifinals of the April 1-5 tournament at My Dinh Indoor Athletics Arena in Hanoi.

PPA Tour Asia heads to Vietnam's capital with 1,000 PPA ranking points on the line, and the MB Hanoi Cup carries a prize purse of up to US$300,000, making every early exit costly. The format compounds that pressure: matches are played as single elimination, with all bouts decided in best-of-three games to 11, win by 2, and a bronze medal match for semifinal losers.

The men's doubles draw is where the bracket problem is sharpest. Gabe Tardio and Ben Johns are seeded first, with Hayden Patriquin and Federico Staksrud drawn as the second seed. In a standard eight-team single-elimination bracket, the one and two seeds are placed on opposite halves, but the presence of unseeded and lower-seeded pairs with credible credentials creates the conditions for a quarterfinal that would serve as the de facto title match. Tyson McGuffin and R. Newman sit at seed four, while D. Frazier and Eric Oncins are seeded third. Oncins, who delivered an epic performance in the men's doubles final in Kuala Lumpur in 2025 alongside McGuffin, now lines up on the opposite side of the bracket from his former partner.

The women's side adds its own subplot. Ben Johns returns to Vietnam after competing in last season's MB Vietnam Cup, and Kaitlyn Christian is back looking for another golden finish. Johns will be out for redemption, having been denied a podium finish at the MB Vietnam Cup by Armaan Bhatia and Zane Navratil in the semis. Navratil is back in the field as well, now paired with H. Ly rather than Bhatia, reshuffling the competitive calculus from last season entirely.

The PPA Tour Asia's second season will have an explosive start with the MB Hanoi Cup, as the season opener features six PPA Tour superstars. Tardio, who recently signed with Vietnam-based Facolos, is looking to make a strong impression in Hanoi, with the 20-year-old previously stating he looks forward to experiencing Asia's "awesome" pickleball crowds. Staksrud will be competing in Asia for only the second time, his first appearance having come at the Hangzhou Open last season.

It will be the third time within two years that a PPA Asia 1000 event is held in Vietnam, with more than 700 players registered across elite and amateur disciplines. For the pro field, though, the bracket means the most grueling matches may come before the final day. In a single-elimination draw this loaded, the player who wins the tournament may well have already beaten the best opponent in the field two rounds earlier.
