For the first time in the Indian Open's history, Hyderabad's CrossCourts facility hosted a PWR 1000-ranked event when Global Sports and the Indian Pickleball Association formalised their landmark partnership on April 1, drawing more than 1,100 players across 54 categories. The five-day tournament carried a $50,000 prize pool, and with IPA-sanctioned PWR ranking points now attached to every result, the competitive stakes shifted perceptibly from any previous edition.
The upgrade matters structurally. The IPA holds National Sports Federation status from India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and its alignment with Global Sports does more than legitimise a popular private tournament: it inserts the Indian Open's results directly into the national ranking ecosystem that shapes international selection. Players competing at CrossCourts this week were not simply chasing prize money; they were positioning themselves for events such as the US Open in Naples, Florida, which follows in nine days.
The pro draws reflected that elevated intent. Arjun Singh, Rashein Samuel, Aman Patel, Rishi Reddy, Anahat Mudgil, and Harsh Mehta headlined the singles and doubles brackets, their seedings setting up the matchup sequences that defined the opening days of play. The mixed doubles draw drew particular depth, pairing established combinations against newly-formed partnerships using the tournament as a proving ground. Running 54 simultaneous categories across pro singles, mixed doubles, and junior U16 and U12 tracks put CrossCourts under significant operational pressure, requiring consistent PWR 1000 court standards while managing amateur and pro scheduling across a five-day window.
Results validated the event's ambitions early. Raaquib Merchant claimed the Advanced Singles title, and Dev Shah and Agni took the mixed-doubles gold. In the junior brackets, Anushka Chhabria had been flagged before the tournament as a breakout candidate in the younger age groups and converted that expectation into multiple junior medals.
The broader significance lies in what 1,100-plus competitive entries represent at the system level. Three previous Indian Open editions attracted a combined total of more than 4,000 players from 19 countries, and those participation numbers have built a talent identification base that now carries an official ranking infrastructure behind it. The IPA-Global Sports partnership formalised what had been building organically: a conversion of India's outsized recreational base into an internationally legible competitive pipeline. Sponsor visibility sharpens when prize pools are real and results carry ranking weight, and that is precisely the condition the Indian Open's PWR 1000 status was designed to create.
