Mississippi church allegedly hosted baby shower for pregnant 14-year-old

Police believed a Mississippi church may have hosted a baby shower for a 14-year-old girl who became pregnant by the pastor’s 27-year-old son. The allegation pushed a child-abuse case into a broader reckoning over who inside a faith community helped normalize it.

Multiple outlets said a mother and son were arrested and charged with child abuse and sex crimes after the girl became pregnant. The girl had been living with the family when the alleged abuse occurred, and on June 30 the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office received a referral from the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services. Investigators later examined the 27-year-old’s phone for electronic evidence, extending the case beyond witness accounts and into digital records.
