Barcelona’s 25th Spanish Iyengar Yoga Convention showed how a tightly controlled, technique-heavy event can scale without losing its identity. The in-person places were fully booked at Sala Llull 119 in Poblenou, while a streaming option opened the weekend to remote practitioners with more than 16 hours of live practice and replay access for two months.

The convention ran from 24 to 26 April 2026 with Abhijata Iyengar as guest teacher, giving the gathering the kind of lineage weight that defines the Iyengar method. Abhijata Iyengar, the granddaughter of B.K.S. Iyengar, is a senior teacher and co-director at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune. Her path through the system, beginning serious study at age 16 under B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Prashant Iyengar, underscored why this convention drew such a strong response from a community that values precision and direct transmission.

AEYI’s format also made clear why the event fit Barcelona so well. Sala Llull 119 sits near the beach and close to Llacuna metro station, and the association describes the hall as spacious but capacity-limited, with meals served in an adjoining room. That setup gave the convention a retreat-like rhythm rather than the feel of a drop-in studio class, reinforcing the premium, teacher-led model that has kept the Iyengar community loyal over decades.

The streaming layer was the most visible sign that the format is changing. AEYI’s move extended access to practitioners who could not get to Barcelona, while preserving the long-form teaching that defines the convention. It was also a continuation of a shift the association had already tested in 2022, when it organized an online event with Abhijata S. Iyengar after the 2020 and 2021 conventions were not held because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The 2026 edition landed inside a broader milestone year for AEYI, which said it was celebrating 30 years of its journey, dedicated to nurturing, promoting and preserving the Iyengar method. The conventions page showed a national circuit already in motion, with Barcelona hosting the 2024 general convention, Palma de Mallorca hosting the 2024 convention with Gulnaaz Dashti, and Santiago de Compostela hosting the 2023 edition.

For Barcelona’s wellness market, the sold-out convention pointed to demand beyond trend-driven fitness. The city already has a dense yoga scene in Poblenou and a wider identity tied to the sea and wellness activity, but this gathering stood apart for its disciplined sequencing, prop work with blocks, belts and ropes, and the promise of high-level instruction that can now reach beyond the room in Poblenou.
