Protein shakes are moving well beyond gym bags and bodybuilding routines. Nestlé is now using the category to court older adults and people taking GLP-1 medications, betting that convenience, satiety and muscle-preservation benefits will matter more than fitness branding as appetites shrink and nutrition needs get more specific.

The shift started to show in the U.S. on May 21, 2024, when Nestlé introduced Vital Pursuit as a companion food line for GLP-1 weight-loss medication users and consumers focused on weight management. The products were described as high in protein, a good source of fiber and rich in essential nutrients, a formulation meant to do more than replace calories. Nestlé widened that strategy on June 2, 2025, with BOOST Advanced Nutritional Shake, designed for adults on GLP-1s, dieting or exercising. Each shake packs 35 grams of high-quality protein, 4 grams of prebiotic fiber, 8 essential B vitamins and 25 vitamins and minerals.

Nestlé also pushed the category closer to pre-meal appetite management with BOOST Pre-Meal Hunger Support, which delivers 10 grams of clinically studied whey protein, 45 calories and 1 gram of sugar per serving. The drink is positioned for use 10 to 30 minutes before a meal, an explicit signal that protein shakes are being engineered around smaller appetites and tighter eating windows, not just post-workout recovery.

By February 2026, Nestlé had taken the concept further with Nestlé Vital, its first product line aimed at midlife and older consumers. The line is framed around smart and healthy aging, with benefits tied to energy, strength, sleep, focus, and physical and mental recovery. Nestlé says its Smart Aging program uses science-backed micro-habits for nutrition, body and mind, along with personalized guidance and weekly checklists, turning a shake into part of a broader daily routine.

That repositioning tracks with the health case around GLP-1 use and aging. A 2025 scientific review found GLP-1 therapies can bring challenges including nutrient inadequacies and loss of muscle and bone mass, while Harvard Health wrote in August 2024 that protein plus resistance exercise can significantly aid muscle growth in older adults. The same article cited a study of nearly 12,000 adults age 51 and older in which about 46% did not meet daily protein recommendations. Nestlé is banking on that overlap, selling protein not as gym fuel, but as a practical tool for managing appetite, preserving muscle and supporting longevity.
