Subway launches nationwide value menu with protein-rich sandwiches under $5
Subway's $3.99 Protein Pockets topped 20 grams of protein, but McDonald's McDouble still beats them on protein per dollar.

Subway is trying to turn protein into a price signal. Its Fresh Value Menu went nationwide April 28 with 15 entrees under $5 at more than 18,000 U.S. restaurants, anchored by Deli Faves and Protein Pockets at $3.99 and a rotating Sub of the Day at $4.99. With most items carrying more than 20 grams of protein, the $3.99 tier works out to just over 5 grams of protein per dollar, a clean test of whether affordable fast food can still feel substantial.
The lineup gives that idea a very specific shape. Deli Faves include the Spicy Pepperoni, Ham & Salami, B.L.T. and Cold Cut Combo, while Protein Pockets cover Baja Chicken, Peppercorn Ranch Chicken, Italian Trio and Turkey Ham. Subway had already introduced Protein Pockets earlier in 2026 as grab-and-go wraps with more than 20 grams of protein, and the value menu now folds them into a broader affordability push. Customers can also add chips and a drink to the Sub of the Day for $2, and Subway said prices are higher in California, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. Dave Skena said Subway's Fresh Value Menu proves you do not have to choose between eating well and saving money.

The competition has made that calculation unavoidable. McDonald's McDouble sits on the chain's under $3 menu, with a reported $2.50 price and 22 grams of protein, or 8.8 grams per dollar. Taco Bell's Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito costs $1.49 on the chain's value menu and delivers 9 grams of protein, about 6 grams per dollar. Subway does not win the raw protein-per-dollar race, but it closes the gap while leaning on freshly made, never fried assembly and a more polished six-inch format than the old all-or-nothing bargain pitch. In a market where value menus now double as protein platforms, that is the real repositioning.
