Food Bank of Delaware turns state fair into hunger-relief drive

Food Bank of Delaware turned Delaware State Fair crowds into a hunger-relief drive July 27, offering one free gate admission to fairgoers who brought five Food Lion brand boxed or canned goods. The one-day push landed inside a fair that ran July 23 through August 1 at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, giving the nonprofit a built-in stream of families, volunteers and repeat visitors.

For A Simple Gesture, the mechanics were familiar: make the ask concrete, make the reward immediate and put the donation point where people are already gathering. Food Bank of Delaware’s fair promotion did that in one move, tying a community outing to a specific grocery brand and a simple threshold. That is the same kind of low-friction behavior A Simple Gesture depends on when it asks households to set out its green bags on the doorstep, then keep food recovery part of the weekly routine.

The timing also matched the summer hunger cycle Food Bank of Delaware has been emphasizing in its Hunger-Free Summer messaging. The nonprofit has noted that children lose access to free or reduced-price school meals when school lets out, and its hunger facts pages cite Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap data showing 134,320 people in Delaware faced hunger in 2023, including 37,920 children. A 2024 Food Bank of Delaware post said more than 125,000 people in the state were food insecure in 2022.

The fair drive also showed how a retail partner can widen the reach. Food Lion Feeds tied its name to the event, giving the campaign a recognizable consumer hook, while Food Bank of Delaware supplied the hunger-relief network and the distribution capacity behind it. Food Lion Feeds says it supports hunger relief and childhood hunger grants, a partnership model that can help food banks, pantry partners and neighborhood programs like A Simple Gesture recruit new donors and keep existing volunteers engaged.

The state fair activation was not a one-off. Food Bank of Delaware announced an 11th annual Food Lion Feeds Hunger Relief Day in 2022, a 10th annual event in 2021, an 8th annual event in 2019 and a 6th annual event in 2017. In 2021, fairgoers donated 15,401 pounds of food and more than 4,000 people participated; in 2017, the drive brought in almost 25,000 pounds. A Food Lion news release from 2013 said the fair drive collected 20,932 pounds, more than 5,000 pounds above the prior year. With Food Bank of Delaware saying every dollar donated can provide three meals, the fair became more than a public event, it became a repeatable intake point for the food recovery system.
