Erin Thomas, the organization’s volunteer and family programs manager, said that after a long day at the hospital, something as simple as a hot meal can provide comfort and relief.
Meals that Matter provides at least one hot meal a day at both of its locations, with meal groups preparing 25 to 30 plates at a time. Breakfast, lunch and dinner slots are available, and the chapter caps meal groups at six volunteers, with participants required to be at least 12 years old. At the Family Room inside the hospital, groups can prepare an extra 10 to 15 plates.
RMHC-ENC has had more than 31,000 admissions since 1987. The chapter operates a house on Moye Boulevard in Greenville and another inside ECU Health’s Maynard Children’s Hospital. The Moye Boulevard house sits just across the street from ECU Health and gives families a place to rest, prepare hot meals and talk with other parents facing similar uncertainty. The Maynard Children’s Hospital location offers a 2,500-square-foot common area and six guest rooms for pediatric patients and their families. Those rooms serve families whose children are hospitalized overnight or there for an outpatient procedure.
In June, Food Lion’s Nourishing our Neighbors spring and summer grant cycle awarded nearly $1 million to more than 280 nonprofit organizations. The grant cycle supported 264 groups with more than $1.1 million in 2025, and Food Lion Feeds has helped provide more than 1.5 billion meals since 2014 while working toward a 3 billion meal goal by 2032. The foundation has distributed more than $25 million across Food Lion’s 10-state footprint since 2001.
Since 2015, A Simple Gesture has made food donations easy through green-bag collections in Guilford County and works with dozens of food pantries and food recovery partners.
