Teamsters suspend Costco talks, raising stakes for wages and benefits

The Teamsters suspended Costco national contract negotiations on Aug. 27, 2024, after Costco canceled scheduled bargaining sessions, signaling that the fight over wages and benefits had moved beyond the table. For workers in unionized warehouses, the pause meant the next phase could be strike pressure, public messaging, or a return to talks under heavier scrutiny.

The union had already warned that leverage was building. On July 29, 2024, Teamsters said Costco workers had authorized a strike ahead of national bargaining, and by Jan. 20, 2025, the union said more than 18,000 Costco workers nationwide had voted 85% to authorize a strike if no agreement was reached by Jan. 31. That vote turned the deadline into a real countdown for front-end assistants, stockers, forklift operators, meat and bakery workers, optical staff, and warehouse managers watching the talks from the floor.

The pressure kept building in public. On Dec. 20, 2024, Teamsters said Costco had refused their economic proposal as the Jan. 31 deadline approached. On Jan. 11, 2025, the union said some progress had been made but Costco and the union remained far apart. Then Southern California Costco Teamsters staged a practice picket in San Diego on Jan. 16, and Teamsters said on Jan. 24 that 18,000 Costco Teamsters were prepared to strike if no contract was reached by the deadline.

That sequence mattered because each step told workers something different about bargaining power. A suspended session was not the same as a failed contract; it was a sign that both sides were testing how much pressure the other could absorb. For Costco, a retailer known for strong hourly wages and benefits, the stakes were especially visible because any dispute over pay or health coverage touched the heart of its labor model.

The dispute did not end with the pause. Teamsters and Costco reached a tentative agreement before Jan. 31, 2025, and Teamsters documents showed the contract period running from Feb. 1, 2025 through Jan. 31, 2028. The earlier national agreement had covered Feb. 1, 2022 through Jan. 31, 2025, after Teamsters ratified Costco’s first-ever national contract in 2022.

The pressure was not limited to warehouse crews. In August 2024, Teamsters said more than 150 Costco fleet drivers in Washington voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, and in December 2023 the union said Costco workers in Virginia joined the Teamsters. For Costco workers watching future bargaining rounds, the lesson is plain: when talks stop, the real leverage fight often starts.
