Nexgrill recalled more than 10.2 million metal wire-bristle grill brushes sold at Home Depot stores and on homedepot.com after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received at least 68 reports of metal bristles breaking loose from the brushes, five of which resulted in consumers needing medical treatment to remove wire fragments from their throats or digestive tracts.

The recall covers six brush models sold between 2015 and 2026 at prices ranging from $5 to $15: model numbers 530-0024, 530-0024G, 530-0034, 530-0039, 530-0041, and 530-0042. All six feature black plastic or wooden handles in 18- or 21-inch lengths, with the model number printed on the product packaging and the Nexgrill brand name on the product itself.

The hazard follows a straightforward but serious sequence: small metal wires detach from the brush head, adhere to grill grates, transfer to food during cooking, and are unknowingly swallowed. According to the CPSC, ingested bristles can become lodged in the throat, stomach, or intestines and cause serious internal injuries that may require surgery.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we made the proactive decision to voluntarily recall these brushes based on our leadership in the BBQ industry and our partnership with the CPSC," Nexgrill said in a statement. The company separately told NJ.com that its commitment to customers "includes providing clear instructions to examine the brush before use, to discard the brush if any bristles are loose, and make sure cooking surfaces have no loose bristles before cooking."

There are two paths to a refund. Consumers can return the brushes directly to any Home Depot location. Nexgrill is also running an online registration process through nexgrill.com, under Product Recalls, or through mktpoint.com: consumers receive a registration code, upload a photograph of the brush showing that code along with their initials, and after confirmation receive disposal instructions and a gift card refund. Nexgrill specifically instructs consumers not to throw out the brush before that registration clears.

The CPSC also recommended that consumers switch to alternative grill-cleaning tools, including brushes with nylon bristles or bristle-free options entirely. Nexgrill said it is expanding its lineup of grill cleaning tools without metal wire bristles.

The Nexgrill action follows a similar recall in February, when 3.2 million Weber metal wire-bristle grill brushes were pulled for the same type of ingestion hazard. With both recalls now active at the start of outdoor grilling season, the wire-bristle brush category has drawn sustained scrutiny from federal safety regulators. Consumers with food-safety questions related to ingestion can contact the USDA meat and poultry hotline at 888-674-6854 or email MPHotline@usda.gov; the Ask USDA chat service runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.
