Home Depot rolled out Material List Builder AI to professional customers, introducing an AI-powered way for renovators, remodelers, builders and specialty tradespeople to create complete project material lists in minutes. The feature, offered free to Pro Xtra members inside Home Depot’s Project Planning tool, interprets project intent and produces grouped, phase-by-phase draft lists that users can edit, save and reuse.

Pros can submit project details using natural-language text, hands-free voice-to-text, pasted spreadsheets or starter templates for common jobs such as bathroom remodels and deck builds. Draft lists include SKU-level product recommendations, Pro pricing and inventory availability; once a user accepts a draft, product SKUs and ordering options populate under each project section and users can place orders through Home Depot channels. Saved lists are retained for reuse to simplify repeat jobs and recurring estimates.

"Material List Builder AI generates reliable, comprehensive job lists in a fraction of the time it would take to complete this process manually, and Pros can then spend more time focused on their customers and the job at hand." The company framed the capability as a time-saver that reduces hours of SKU research and manual list-building to minutes, folding ordering and inventory checks into a single workflow.

The announcement, made January 26, 2026, has implications across Home Depot’s workforce. Pro sales and account teams will be expected to support Pros adopting the tool while advising on pricing and ordering. Store and fulfillment associates may see faster, more highly structured Pro orders arriving at their locations for pick, pack and delivery. Corporate product, inventory and merchandising teams will need to coordinate SKU recommendations and availability logic to keep the AI’s suggestions accurate. Training and onboarding teams will have new curricula to teach both associates and Pro customers how to generate, edit and order from AI-created lists.

Material List Builder AI also aligns with Home Depot’s broader push to deploy AI across Pro workflows and agentic capabilities, positioning associates’ roles to shift from administrative tasks toward higher-value advisory and fulfillment responsibilities. For frontline employees, that could mean more time interacting with customers, managing logistics and handling complex order exceptions rather than manual SKU assembly.

For Pros and Home Depot staff, the immediate next steps will be adoption and training. Pros can begin using the tool within the Project Planning tool, while store managers and corporate leaders will monitor order flow, accuracy of AI recommendations and training uptake as the feature scales across Home Depot’s Pro channels.
