Naoki Yoshida spent part of Square Enix’s Fan Festival keynote in Anaheim showing Final Fantasy XIV running on a Nintendo Switch 2, and the bigger surprise was not the handheld demo. It was the business model: the MMO is headed to Switch 2 in August 2026 with its own subscription, separate from Nintendo Switch Online and separate from any existing PC, PlayStation, or Xbox plan.

Square Enix said players will need to buy a copy of FINAL FANTASY XIV for Nintendo Switch 2 and then pay for a subscription tied to that version. Existing subscribers on other platforms will get a 50% discount on the Switch 2 fee, a clear signal that the company expects some players to add Nintendo hardware rather than replace their other accounts. The first month will be an early access period meant to stabilize servers before official service begins.

For Nintendo, the announcement matters because FFXIV is not a lightweight one-off port. It is one of the biggest live-service worlds in games, and it has long been requested on Nintendo hardware. Bringing it to Switch 2 gives Square Enix a way to treat Nintendo’s next platform as a real long-term destination, not just a secondary storefront for older catalog games. Players will be able to keep their character and account when moving to Switch 2, which lowers the friction for anyone already invested in Eorzea.

The timing also puts Nintendo in the middle of a broader Square Enix push. In the same keynote, the publisher announced FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold, the patch 8.0 expansion, due in January 2027 and positioned as the start of the next major story arc. Fan Festival 2026 continues after Anaheim, with Berlin set for July 25 to 26 and Tokyo for October 31 to November 1.

The free-trial details may become another pressure point for expectations. On other platforms, Square Enix has already expanded the trial to level 70 and added Shadowbringers, but it did not spell out whether the Switch 2 version will launch with the same scope. That kind of detail can shape first impressions fast, especially for a game that lives or dies on onboarding, server reliability, and how quickly new players can move from curiosity to subscription.
