American Express and Resy launch free leadership program for restaurant workers

American Express, Resy and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation have launched Restaurant Academy, a free leadership program for restaurant workers aimed at developing the next generation of restaurant leaders. The foundation is framing it as “Building stronger leaders to strengthen the future of small restaurants,” a pitch that lands squarely at the industry’s biggest promotion problem: plenty of people can run a station, but far fewer get structured help learning how to run a shift, a crew or a whole operation.

That gap is real on the floor and in the back of house. A strong server, bartender, host or line cook does not automatically know how to coach employees, handle payroll basics, read a profit-and-loss statement, manage conflict or make decisions that affect labor, food cost and guest experience at the same time. Those are the skills that separate hourly work from shift lead, assistant manager, general manager or owner-operator jobs, and they are rarely taught in a restaurant before someone is already expected to use them.

Restaurant Academy is also an open application program, which matters in an industry where advancement is often informal and uneven. The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation says it exists to empower people from all backgrounds with training and education for a better future in the restaurant, foodservice and hospitality industry, and the academy fits that pipeline approach more than the usual internal handoff that depends on whether a manager notices someone’s potential. A free program lowers one of the clearest barriers to advancement: cost.

The broader foundation portfolio shows how deliberate that pipeline is. ProStart reaches more than 234,000 students in 2,275 high schools across the United States. Restaurant Ready is a national program dedicated to helping people acquire the basic job and life skills needed for restaurant and hospitality jobs, and the Restaurant & Hospitality Leadership Center adds another leadership-focused layer. Restaurant Academy slots into that structure as the step that tries to move workers from competence on the floor to competence in management.

That is where the labor-market significance sits. Restaurants lose experienced workers when the only path upward is trial by fire, and they lose even more when they keep hiring managers from outside who do not understand the operation. A structured leadership track gives hourly workers a clearer route to internal promotion, while giving operators a better shot at building managers who already know the pace, pressure and politics of restaurant work.
