Taco Bell seeks contractors for new Cantina near Nationals Park

Contractors are bidding to build a Taco Bell Cantina at 1250 Half St. SE, giving the chain another foothold in Navy Yard and Capitol Riverfront, less than a block from Nationals Park. The planned restaurant would take over about 3,000 square feet of street-level retail in The Kelvin, the former Swingers Crazy Golf space.

The move matters for workers because a Cantina is not a standard Taco Bell. Taco Bell says the format uses an upscale restaurant design and specialty alcoholic beverages, which typically pushes the operation toward more dine-in service, later hours and closer control over alcohol procedures than a typical fast-food unit. In practice, that can mean a different mix of cashiers, food runners, shift leads and managers, plus added training around ID checks, alcohol handling and late-night closing.

The location also fits the traffic pattern around Nationals Park better than a drive-thru-heavy store would. The Kelvin’s leasing materials describe Navy Yard as a high-foot-traffic, mixed-use area with more than 3 million annual visitors, surrounded by residential, office and entertainment activity. For a restaurant team, that usually translates into game-day spikes, bar-adjacent rushes and a heavier weekend and evening schedule than a suburban Taco Bell would see.

That same site has already shown how quickly a restaurant concept can run into operational pressure. Swingers Crazy Golf opened at 1250 Half St. SE in March 2023 and closed in October 2023, about seven months later, after citing location factors tied to the Navy Yard property. A Taco Bell Cantina would inherit the same address, the same foot traffic and the same test of whether the space can support steady late-night business.

Taco Bell already operates Cantina locations in Washington, DC, Alexandria and Arlington, including 808 7th Street NW, 417 King St. and 2039 Wilson Boulevard. That gives the company a local base of experience, but the Navy Yard store would still sit in a different operating lane from a standard Taco Bell: more urban, more alcohol-focused and more dependent on dinner and nightlife volume than the usual lunch-and-drive-thru rhythm.

For crew members and shift managers, that difference can shape everything from scheduling to promotion opportunities. A Cantina in Navy Yard would likely need people who can handle a busier service floor, longer evenings and stricter compliance checks, while also offering a path into higher-responsibility roles in a format Taco Bell uses to reach denser city markets.
