Trader Joe’s is heading back into tote-bag mania with a striped mini canvas version set for this summer, a small product change that has already shown it can pull crowds, spark questions and create headaches on the sales floor. The company has not released an exact date, price, image or color details, but spokesperson Nakia Rohde said Trader Joe’s “has plans to offer a new striped mini canvas tote this summer.”

For the Monrovia, California-based chain, the bag launch is more than a novelty. The original mini canvas totes, which sold for $2.99, moved faster than Trader Joe’s expected when they went viral in March 2024, before the company had fully promoted them. TikTok clips about the bags drew millions of views, including one launch video that topped 3 million views and nearly 170,000 likes, and some stores limited how many a customer could buy as lines formed early.

Trader Joe’s also said it does not endorse resale of any of its products, but that did not stop the secondary market from taking off. Coverage of the 2024 frenzy documented resale listings that climbed into the hundreds of dollars, with some multi-bag lots reaching nearly $1,000 and others topping $500. That kind of markup turns a low-cost reusable bag into a status item, and it shows how quickly a practical purchase can become a collectible when supply is tight.

Trader Joe’s later pushed the concept further with its Canvas Micro Tote, a limited-time bag the company describes as about 4.5 inches by 3.5 inches. Even the size became part of the pitch, with Trader Joe’s making clear that the smaller the tote, the bigger the excitement. The striped version now seems ready to extend that formula, with a familiar mix of scarcity, social media buzz and customer competition.

For store crews, the real story is operational. A tote launch can mean repeated questions at the register, fast sellouts, restocking pressure and shoppers who are either thrilled to find one or frustrated when they miss out. Managers will need to plan for crowd control, clear communication and a steady pace at the front end, because the bag may be small, but the disruption is not.
