How to Choose Clothes That Last: Construction, Materials, and Smart Shopping Tips
Most clothes fail within two years — not from wear, but from weak seams and cheap fibre blends you can learn to spot before you buy.

The average garment is discarded after just seven to ten wears, and textile waste has become one of the most visible failures of modern consumer culture. But the solution isn't necessarily buying less; it's buying better. Understanding what separates a coat that survives a decade from one that pills and puckers after a season comes down to two things you can assess before you ever reach the till: construction and materials. Once you know what to look for, the process takes less than two minutes per garment.
Read the construction before you read the label
Turn any garment inside out and you'll learn more about its longevity in thirty seconds than any marketing copy will tell you. The first thing to examine is the stitching: tight, even stitches (generally ten to twelve per inch for woven fabrics) signal a manufacturer who wasn't cutting corners on thread tension. Loose or irregular stitching will unravel under repeated washing and movement. Look at how many stitches reinforce stress points, specifically the base of zips, the crotch seam on trousers, and the junction of a sleeve and bodice. These are the places garments fail first, and quality manufacturers know it.
Seam finishes tell an equally revealing story. Raw, unfinished edges fray with washing, weakening the entire seam over time. Finished seams, whether flat-felled (where the raw edge is folded and stitched down, common in quality denim), bound with fabric tape, or overlocked cleanly, indicate a maker who built durability into the process rather than treating it as optional. On knitwear, check that seams are linked rather than overlocked: a linked seam lies flat and flexes with the fabric; an overlocked seam on a jumper will often twist and pull after a few washes.
Pattern matching at seams, particularly on stripes and checks, is another proxy for quality. Aligning a print across a seam costs more in time and fabric; brands that do it are signalling a standard of construction that typically extends throughout the garment.
Fibre types and the blends that actually hold up
Natural fibres occupy a complicated position in durability conversations. Pure cotton breathes and softens beautifully but weakens when wet and fades under UV exposure. Wool, particularly tightly woven wool like a dense tweed or a high-twist worsted, is extraordinarily resilient: the natural crimp in wool fibres creates elasticity that synthetic fabrics struggle to replicate, and quality wool resists odour, wrinkles, and light soiling far better than most alternatives. Linen is among the strongest plant fibres available and actually becomes stronger when wet, though it requires acceptance of its characteristic creasing.
Blends complicate the picture. A small percentage of synthetic fibre added to a natural base can genuinely extend wearability: a wool-nylon blend in sock yarns is a canonical example, where even 20% nylon dramatically reduces wear-through at the heel. But blends can also be used to reduce cost rather than improve performance. A polyester-heavy cotton blend that claims breathability often delivers neither the comfort of pure cotton nor meaningful durability. The key question is whether the blend serves a structural purpose (added stretch, reduced shrinkage, improved abrasion resistance) or simply reduces the manufacturer's raw material cost.
Remake's buying guide flags fibre blends as one of the primary areas where consumers are misled, particularly in the mid-market where natural-fibre-forward branding is attached to fabrics that are 60% polyester by weight. Reading a care label carefully, including the full fibre content percentage, is a non-negotiable first step.
Fabric weight matters independently of fibre type. A lightweight linen shirt at 100gsm will wear through faster than a dense 180gsm version; a thin cotton jersey t-shirt at under 150gsm will pill and lose shape far sooner than one at 180gsm or above. What to check in the fitting room
Construction assessment doesn't end at the seams. Button attachment is a reliable signal: buttons should be sewn through a shank or with a thread shank underneath to allow the button to move freely through the buttonhole without pulling the fabric. Buttons sewn flat to the fabric with minimal thread will loosen rapidly. On coats and jackets, lining quality is worth examining: a full lining that is attached only at the hem and cuffs, rather than sewn rigidly to every seam, will drape properly and allow the outer fabric to move independently, reducing stress on both layers.

3. Check fabric weight if listed, or assess by handling: does the fabric feel substantial, or does it stretch and distort easily under light tension?
4. Examine closures: buttons, zips, rivets, and press studs for finish quality and firmness.
5. For patterned fabric, check seam alignment at side seams.
The secondary market offers another layer of quality intelligence. A secondhand garment that has survived multiple owners and still presents well is, by definition, proving its durability in real conditions. Vintage and pre-loved shopping also surfaces construction standards that have largely disappeared from contemporary mid-market retail, particularly the fully finished internal seams and reinforced stress points that were standard practice before the industrialisation of fast fashion in the 1990s.
Why this matters beyond personal wardrobe
Textile waste is not an abstract environmental metric. The resources embedded in a garment, water, energy, land use for fibre cultivation, chemical processing, are lost every time a piece is discarded prematurely. Buying fewer, better-constructed garments directly reduces wardrobe turnover and the volume of textile entering waste streams.
