Adrian Erlandsson says grief delayed hearing At The Gates new album
Adrian Erlandsson says he could barely face At The Gates’ finished album after Tomas Lindberg died, turning The Ghost Of A Future Dead into a final memorial.

Adrian Erlandsson says the hardest part of At The Gates’ new record was not cutting the drums, but hearing the finished album after Tomas Lindberg’s death. The drummer said Lindberg’s cancer battle, and then his passing, made it difficult to engage with The Ghost Of A Future Dead in the normal way, and he had not even read the lyrics until very recently. For a band that built its name on precision and chemistry, that delay gives the album a heavier emotional charge than any release schedule ever could.
The Ghost Of A Future Dead arrives on April 24, 2026 via Century Media Records as At The Gates’ eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2021’s The Nightmare Of Being. It runs 42:30, was recorded and mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, and has already been previewed by two singles: The Fever Mask, released on February 20, and The Dissonant Void, released on April 7. Century Media says The Fever Mask was one of the final songs written for the record and was chosen as both the opener and first single because it captures the band’s classic energy and melody.

The album’s release lands in the shadow of Lindberg’s death on September 16, 2025, at age 52, after complications related to cancer treatment. Lindberg had revealed on August 15, 2025 that he was diagnosed in December 2023 with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer in the mouth and palate, and said he underwent major surgery and two months of radiation therapy. Century Media says the album was completed more than two years before its release, with Lindberg’s wishes guiding the title, sound mix, track order, artwork, and overall presentation. The label’s own description is blunt: “This album is Tomas’ legacy.”
That framing matters because At The Gates are not just any metal band. Formed in Gothenburg in 1990, they helped define the melodic death metal template alongside Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, and the record list reflects that history with English and Swedish titles like Det Oerhörda and Förgängligheten. Dark Tranquillity’s Mikael Stanne has said Lindberg was central to the Gothenburg death metal scene, and that the scene would not exist without him. Erlandsson’s comments make the drummer’s role plain: in a long-running band, the kit does not just keep time, it keeps memory. When The Ghost Of A Future Dead lands, fans will hear a new album, but they will also hear Lindberg’s final presence in the story of At The Gates.
