National Drum King Competition Brings 14 Teams to Zhengding Ancient City

The 2026 National Drum King Competition filled Zhengding Ancient City's Wengcheng with thunder on Sunday, drawing 14 top-tier drum troupes from across China to Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, for a day of competitive performance and street parade.

China Daily described the event as attracting troupes to "celebrate the spring season with lively drumming, presenting exquisite programs ranging from traditional Chinese styles to international acts." Following the competitive sets, the troupes moved out of the performance space and paraded through Zhengding itself, bringing folk drum art directly to residents and tourists on the streets of the ancient city.

One report placed the participating count at 13 rather than 14, offering a more detailed breakdown: eleven teams carrying strong regional identities from Beijing, Tianjin, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan, Guangdong, and Hunan, joined by two "Golden Drum King" teams that had distinguished themselves in provincial-level competition. Personnel from the Shijiazhuang Mass Art Museum described the assembled troupes as "rigorously selected as representatives of China's highest level in drum art." Xinhua and China Daily both reported 14 teams; the official participant count should be confirmed with the event organizers.

Two local entries stood out in that reporting. The Hongwen Middle School War Drum Team built its reputation on synchronized formation changes paired with explosive beats, with multiple strong finishes at national competitions already on its record. The Zhao County Nansi Zhuang Backlight Carrying Drum Team takes a completely different approach: performers carry specially designed light frames during nighttime shows, weaving light and percussion into a single visual-sonic effect rooted in ancient folk tradition.

The venue itself was a deliberate choice. Wengcheng's circular layout was selected specifically because, as one account noted, "its circular space can perfectly showcase drum performances' stunning effects." Zhengding holds national historical and cultural city status, and the combination of that heritage backdrop with the acoustic properties of the circular space gave the competition a staging environment that a flat outdoor stage simply cannot replicate.

The event carried the official theme "Inheritance, Innovation, Benefiting People," framing the competition not just as a showcase of technique but as a statement about the continued vitality of Chinese percussion traditions.
