Lock Pick Village brings hands-on lockpicking to DEF CON 34

Lock Pick Village is set to return to DEF CON 34 as a physical security demonstration and participation area, putting locksport inside one of the conference’s most visible spaces. The village is scheduled for Aug. 6-9, 2026, at Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall, with the whole point built around hands-on work rather than passive watching.

That setup matters because lockpicking is easiest to learn when the tools, the lock body, and the feedback are all in front of you. A village format gives newcomers a place to handle real hardware, ask what tension feels like, and figure out why a keyway fights back. It also gives experienced pickers room to compare picks, discuss bypass ideas, and drill the discipline that keeps the hobby on the ethical side of the line.

DEF CON’s villages page shows Lock Pick Village is not a one-off curiosity but part of a standard conference structure. DEF CON 34’s village lineup also includes Adversary Village, AI Village and Blue Team Village, which puts physical security in the same hands-on ecosystem as the rest of the event. DEF CON’s FAQ describes the conference as one of the oldest continuously running hacker conventions and one of the largest, and that scale is exactly why a lockpicking village there carries more weight than a side room at a local meetup.

The conference was still filling out its 34th-year programming in July. On July 10, DEF CON said workshop registration would go live at noon PDT on July 14, a reminder that the weeks leading into opening day were still busy with event logistics and signups. That broader schedule matters for Lock Pick Village because it places the locksport room inside a much larger flow of talks, workshops and village activity.

The model is familiar to anyone who has spent time around conference locksport. DefCamp’s Lock Picking Village says attendees can learn to lockpick and be rewarded for their effort, whether they are beginners or pros. DEF CON’s version fits that same mold: a place to learn by doing, to compare technique against real hardware, and to keep mechanical security visible in the middle of a huge hacker conference.
