Getting your hands on the new alternate-art Warstorm Surge means heading to a comic shop. Marvel announced that every first-printing copy of Avengers: Armageddon #1, due June 10, will ship sealed in a polybag containing an exclusive alternate-art Warstorm Surge promo. The distribution is timed to the June 26 launch of Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes, and this is not a card that will show up in any booster pack.

The art is by Ryan Stegman, pulled from his Armageddon/X-Men #1 CGD 2026 Free Comic Book Day work, which will also serve as a variant cover for that issue. Marvel confirmed the illustration won't be reproduced in any other Magic set. The first printing covers all variant covers of Avengers: Armageddon #1, so every edition of the debut issue in its initial run will be polybagged with the card. The comic itself is the launch of a new event series written by Chip Zdarsky with interior art from Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar.

For anyone running Warstorm Surge in Commander, which is a significant chunk of the format: EDHREC tracks the card in more than 173,000 decks, roughly 4.14% of all registered lists. The six-mana red enchantment triggers every time a creature enters the battlefield under your control, dealing damage equal to that creature's power to any target. It has appeared in 14 printings since its original Magic 2012 debut with Raymond Swanland's art, showing up in Commander precons from Commander 2015 through Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and Bloomburrow Commander. The Stegman promo changes none of that: same rules text, same format legality, entirely different look.

The distribution channel is the complication. This promo is gated behind a specific comic-shop purchase in a specific print window, not a draft weekend handout or prerelease inclusion. Standard LGSs that don't carry comic titles won't stock it. If your local game store doesn't double as a comic retailer, June 10 is the date to start watching secondary market listings. Cross-collector demand from both Magic players chasing alternate-art staples and Stegman fans in the comics community will likely compress availability fast once the issue ships.

This is also the second MTG x Marvel collectible to surface ahead of the Marvel Super Heroes release. A Thanos to Plowshares promo appeared through a separate channel in the weeks prior, pointing to a broader seeding campaign that spans multiple retail formats rather than concentrating everything in a single window. The Warstorm Surge polybag is the most straightforwardly accessible of the two: any comic retailer that ordered first-print copies of Avengers: Armageddon #1 will have it. Whether that translates to broad availability or instant sellouts on June 10 depends entirely on how aggressively stores ordered and whether word spreads beyond the comics pull-list crowd before street date.
