Paizo releases Player’s Guides for Clockwork Mystery and Beyond the Blood Door

Paizo posted Player’s Guides for Year of Clockwork Mystery and Beyond the Blood Door as it prepped for Gen Con, giving Pathfinder and Starfinder tables a fast way to sort character fit before Session 0. Alex Speidel greeted “Pathfinders and Starfinders” and called the two guides “two lovely gifts” in the July 22 blog post, which makes the timing plain: these were meant to land before convention season and before either adventure line settled into regular play.

That is exactly where player’s guides earn their keep. They usually point players toward the themes, regions, factions, and character options that fit a campaign, so you spend less time guessing at a concept that will clash with the table and more time building something that belongs there from the first scene. For Game Masters, the same document can work as a spoiler-safe handout for Session 0, giving the table enough campaign shape to set expectations without forcing the GM to draft a custom primer from scratch.

The two titles also signal different kinds of setup. Year of Clockwork Mystery reads like a Pathfinder organized play season built around clockwork or construct-adjacent material, while Beyond the Blood Door was tied to a separate Starfinder Society announcement about the future of that campaign. In that Starfinder Society post, Paizo said its first season was approaching its conclusion and that it was preparing to bring Invasion’s Edge to an end, which puts Beyond the Blood Door in the middle of a season transition rather than as a loose one-off title.

Paizo had already primed the pipeline on July 9 with a monthly Organized Play update from Speidel, then followed with the player’s guide post and its Gen Con messaging. In its Welcome to Gen Con 2025! post, Paizo described the weekend as “the beginning of an all-new era for Starfinder” and “the beginning of Pathfinder’s Hellfire Crisis!” and said that post would serve as a “one-stop guide to everything happening this weekend.” Taken together, the sequence shows a coordinated launch push, with the guides functioning as the practical prep layer under the bigger convention reveal.

That is the real value here. When Paizo drops two guides at once, right before Gen Con, it is not just handing out lore. It is giving tables a shortcut to a character that fits, a GM handout that keeps spoilers out of Session 0, and a cleaner start the moment the first adventure lands on the table.
