Samyang Unveils 200mm f/1.8 Prototype at CP+ 2026, OIS Confirmed for Roadmap

Samyang brought one of the more audacious concept lenses seen at CP+ 2026 last week: a 3D-printed mockup of an AF 200mm f/1.8 for full-frame mirrorless mounts, paired with a commitment to build optical image stabilization into its telephoto primes for the first time in the company's history.

The prototype, photographed by Phototrend at the show, is a 3D-printed shell rather than a working optical design. That distinction matters. Samyang representative Kim Dubin was direct about where the company stands: the South Korean lens maker is in an exploratory phase, using CP+ to gauge interest from photographers and media before committing resources to full development. Production is not guaranteed, and features and specifications remain subject to change.

Still, the intent behind the 200mm f/1.8 is clear. Samyang told Phototrend the lens "could be very expensive," but the company wants a flagship in its lineup that demonstrates its optical technology and prowess. That framing, combined with the Schneider Kreuznach x LK Samyang branding used across the CP+ 2026 presentation, signals Samyang is genuinely testing whether it can compete in territory long held by Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Sigma.

The OIS angle is the most technically significant detail in the announcement. Neither the 200mm f/1.8 nor the companion AF 300mm f/4 prototype have shipped with stabilization, because Samyang has never shipped an OIS lens at all. The company has been developing the technology internally, running tests on 135mm f/1.8 prototypes. The logic for debuting it on the longer telephoto designs first is sound: a 200mm f/1.8 handheld without stabilization is a real liability in the field, and that's precisely where effective OIS earns its keep.

Samyang's CP+ 2026 display extended well beyond the two telephoto primes. The AF 28-85mm f/2-2.8 FE was also shown in early development. Samyang originally wanted to hold a constant f/2 aperture across that range, but the mockups came out too large and too heavy to be practical, so the design shifted to a variable f/2-2.8. That zoom could arrive as early as late 2027. An AF 20-50mm f/2 full-frame zoom was also on the table, though Kim Dubin told Phototrend that one won't see a release until 2028 or 2029 at the earliest.

On the business side, Dubin confirmed that Samyang's L-Mount lineup is performing well in China and Europe, and that the company is waiting on official licenses from Canon and Nikon before it can bring any of these designs to RF and Z mount shooters.

Turning a 3D-printed shell into a shipping lens involves years of optical engineering, manufacturing tooling, and market decisions that haven't been made yet. Samyang knows that. But the public commitment to OIS development, backed by the Schneider Kreuznach partnership, suggests this isn't vaporware posturing. It's a company telegraphing where it wants to go, and asking the market whether it should.
