Cali Rays Sourdough Deli plans six-store Bakersfield rollout on May 9, 2026
Six Bakersfield Cali Rays shops will open May 9 with free sandwich-and-soda giveaways, turning a sourdough deli rollout into a citywide event.

Six Cali Rays Sourdough Deli locations will open across Bakersfield on May 9, a rollout that turns one deli debut into a citywide test of how much sourdough can still grow in Central Valley lunch culture. Each location will hand out free sandwiches and sodas to the first 100 customers, and the opening plan also includes special appearances and community-focused events, the kind of launch theater meant to pack the sidewalks from the start.
The man steering the expansion is Gurdeep Bains, the chain’s CEO, whose path into food started in nursing. Bains has described that work as an early way of caring for people, and he later carried that instinct into entrepreneurship, community building, and the deli business. That backstory gives the Bakersfield push a personal edge at a moment when the brand is trying to look bigger, broader, and more rooted at the neighborhood level.
The new stores arrive as part of a larger brand shift in the Central Valley. Five West Coast Sourdough locations in the region have already rebranded as Cali Rays Sourdough Deli, while seven others still operate under the West Coast Sourdough name. The change is tied to a lawsuit and franchisee fallout, and Bains has framed the company around a franchise-first ethos shaped by his own experience of being mistreated as a franchisee. For Bakersfield, that means the expansion is not just about adding storefronts. It is also about presenting a cleaner identity after a messy split.

The Bakersfield footprint already hints at why the company thinks the market can absorb more than one deli. Online ordering pages list Cali Rays at 5450 Stockdale Hwy, 5649 Gosford Rd. Suite 100, and 2401 M Street Suite 100 downtown. The menus lean heavily on the bread-forward format that has made the chain recognizable: sourdough sandwiches, soups, wraps, gourmet salads, fresh-baked flatbreads, kids meals, catering platters, and lunchbox options. Separate West Coast Sourdough Bakersfield listings still promote sourdough bread, bread bowls, salads, cookies, and catering, underscoring how the sourdough concept has moved from artisan bakery shorthand into a fast-casual playbook built for weekday traffic and repeat orders.
KGET says each Cali Rays location is expected to create roughly 9 to 12 jobs, making the Bakersfield rollout an employment story as much as a food story. With six openings, the chain is betting that sourdough can support a wider footprint, and that a free-sandwich frenzy on day one will translate into regulars long after the first 600 giveaway meals are gone.
