National Forest Service Road 8 closes for construction in South Park district

Travel across South Park took a hard turn when National Forest System Road 8 closed between Kite Lake and Alma for construction. The 1.15-mile shutdown runs through the South Park Ranger District and breaks any plan that depended on direct access to nearby camp spots, trailheads or high-country pulls along that corridor.

The U.S. Forest Service put the closure in place at 12:01 a.m. June 4 under Forest Order #02-12-10-26-13. It is scheduled to remain in effect until 12:01 a.m. July 31 unless rescinded earlier. The affected segment starts at Kite Lake and runs south and southeast to the forest boundary in Alma, making this a full corridor closure rather than a short detour around a work zone.

That matters for anyone threading together a South Park itinerary. Road 8 is the kind of forest route that can anchor a camping loop, a trailhead run, or a fishing day, and when that link disappears the whole plan can unravel. Trips that assumed a direct line through the area now need a different approach, whether that means postponing the outing, choosing another destination, or checking for a usable alternate route before leaving pavement.

The Forest Service said the closure is intended to protect public health and safety while roadway construction takes place along the entire road prism. In practical terms, that language signals active work across the full width of the road corridor, not just spot repairs or a brief lane shift.

The Road 8 restriction also landed alongside other South Park Ranger District actions. The alerts page lists Badger Flats occupancy and use restrictions for fuels-reduction work with heavy equipment, plus LaSalle Pass West and Elevenmile Canyon Entrance occupancy and use restrictions tied to active raptor nest sites. At the same time, the broader forest eased one layer of summer limitations: stage 1 fire restrictions on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands were rescinded effective 12:01 a.m. May 28 after recent rains reduced wildfire risk.

The South Park Ranger District office sits in Fairplay at the northwest corner of U.S. Highway 285 and Colorado Highway 9, at the only stoplight in town. With road work active and weather still capable of changing access fast, the safest move for South Park travelers is to verify alerts before heading out, especially when a trip depends on Road 8 as the key line in and out.
