Lake Superior Woodturners to Feature Natural-Edge Bowl Demo in March Meeting

The Lake Superior Woodturners gathered Saturday, March 14, with natural-edge work front and center as demonstrator Gene Rosburg took members through the techniques behind turning natural-edge bowls and vases.

Natural-edge turning is one of those disciplines that separates casual turners from people who've really thought about the relationship between raw wood and finished form. Leaving the live edge intact means working with irregular profiles, unpredictable grain transitions at the bark line, and the constant judgment call of how much of the natural surface to preserve. Rosburg's choice to cover both bowls and vases in a single demo gave members a look at how the same fundamental approach plays out across two very different forms, one wide and open, the other tall and enclosed.

The March meeting followed the club's standard format, folding the demonstration into a broader agenda that also included regular club business and mentoring opportunities.
