Gucci to Hold First Exhibition by Demna During Milan Design Week

Gucci will open "Gucci Memoria" at the Chiostri di San Simpliciano on April 21, marking the first institutional exhibition curated by Demna since the Georgian designer became the house's artistic director. The show runs through April 26 as part of Fuorisalone, the citywide program that unfolds across Milan alongside Design Week, with a press preview set for April 20.

The exhibition is part of the Milano Moda Design project organized by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, and Gucci describes it as "a symbolic retelling of the house's 105-year history, reflecting its many facets, transformations, and creative expressions." Specific installations have not yet been disclosed, but the framing positions the Chiostri di San Simpliciano, a 16th-century cloister in Milan's Brera district, as an ideal container for a project that treats heritage as a living material, something that can be traversed and transformed.

Gucci has steadily built its presence at Milan Design Week: in 2024, the house staged "Design Ancora," and in 2025, "Bamboo Encounters" used the same Chiostri di San Simpliciano to trace the origin story of the Bamboo 1947 handle. That earlier exhibition was curated and designed by Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli of 2050+ and featured seven contemporary designers reimagining bamboo's role in the house's identity. "Memoria" is the third consecutive Fuorisalone installment for Gucci, but the first where the program falls under a newly appointed creative director's hand.

The timing amplifies the stakes. Demna's late February runway debut for Gucci generated enormous attention, and the collection made clear that his design logic runs on archive retrieval and recontextualization. Accessories from that debut included a streamlined Bamboo 1947 and elongated minaudières stretched for modern life; eveningwear reached into maximum ornamentation with a backless dress revealing a diamond-studded white-gold GG detail. "Memoria" appears set to extend that same argument into installation form.

For the jewelry world specifically, there is something instructive in watching a house this size invest so deliberately in the narrative infrastructure around its objects. A GG clasp has always been a GG clasp; what changes is the depth of context built around it. NSS Magazine notes that "Memoria" reads not as a traditional retrospective but as "a layered reflection on the identities that have shaped the brand over time," which is precisely the distinction between a heritage story told as nostalgia and one told as argument.
