New medical gear on a Pine Level Volunteer Fire Department truck helped save a life in a real emergency, turning a $33,000 town investment into a result town leaders said showed exactly why local emergency spending matters.

The Town of Pine Level said on April 20, 2026, that the department’s newly purchased equipment had recently been used in the field and made the difference for one resident. The package included seven AEDs, specialized medical bags and single-use medical supplies, all intended to make sure front-line fire department vehicles carried updated lifesaving gear. The AEDs were delivered on January 16, 2026, after the Town Council approved the grant in August 2025.

The timing of the announcement lined up with National Volunteer Firefighter Week, which ran from April 19 through April 25, 2026. Pine Level marked the observance with a proclamation honoring the men and women of the department, but the real-world use of the new equipment gave the recognition added weight. Town officials said the episode showed that support for the department was not symbolic, because the right equipment had been on hand when a life-threatening call came in.

Chief Austin Worchester said the department answers about 1,300 calls a year, and roughly 80% of them are emergency medical services calls. That means Pine Level’s volunteers are not only firefighters, they are often the first medical help to reach a scene in a small community where minutes can matter before an ambulance or additional resources arrive.

The department says it was founded in February 1972 and is a member in good standing of the Autauga County Firefighters Association and the Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments. That broader network matters in Autauga County, where the county firefighters association says there are 10 volunteer fire departments with more than 200 operational volunteers. Autauga County Emergency Management also coordinates with fire departments and other response agencies.

For Pine Level, a community listed in the 2020 Census with 4,885 residents, the stakes are especially high. The town’s message made clear that the $33,000 grant was more than a line item, it was a direct investment in keeping lifesaving equipment close enough to matter when volunteers were first on scene.
