Severe thunderstorm watch includes Cleveland, warns of evening storms

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 431 put Cleveland, Mississippi, inside a storm risk window until 10 p.m. CDT Tuesday, with damaging wind gusts, lightning and localized downpours possible as the evening commute gave way to nightfall. The watch covered Bolivar and Washington counties in northwest Mississippi and specifically named Cleveland, along with Delhi, Epps, Greenville, Lake Providence, Oak Grove, Rayville and Tallulah.

The watch came during the hours when residents were heading home from work, taking children to evening activities and keeping businesses open after dark, when a fast-moving thunderstorm can disrupt roads, knock out power and force last-minute changes. Utility crews, event organizers and emergency responders also had to keep an eye on downed limbs, brief flooding and scattered interruptions across the Delta.

Watch and warning products are issued when forecasters have enough confidence that hazardous weather may occur. The broader Mid-South was already dealing with dangerous heat, with heat index values between 105 and 109 degrees expected through Friday and a Heat Advisory in effect area-wide. That meant the thunderstorm threat arrived on top of already punishing conditions for outdoor workers, older residents and anyone without reliable cooling.

A separate special weather statement on July 1 tracked strong thunderstorms across the Delta, with a line stretching from near Lambert to near Drew. Stronger storms in the region could produce damaging winds and localized heavy downpours.
