Drivers on Ashland Road had to plan around an overnight closure Monday as Goochland County and VDOT pushed ahead with paving in the Rockville Opportunity Corridor, the Route 623 stretch that links the growing business district to I-64. The closure ran from 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 27, to 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, on Route 623 from 0.5 miles south of the Republic Services landfill at 1961 Ashland Road to Commerce Center Drive, with detours posted for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Crews were paving the new lanes on the Luck Stone side of Ashland Road, and county officials also planned additional single-lane closures with flaggers overnight on Sunday, April 26, Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 29, all from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Motorists headed to Commerce Center Drive, the landfill area, or other destinations along the corridor were urged to follow posted signs and give themselves extra time while the work was underway. River Road West and Hermitage Road were also on the paving list, adding more disruption for local trips beyond the Ashland Road work zone.

The work is tied to the Rockville Opportunity Corridor, which Goochland County describes as a 3.5-mile corridor in eastern Goochland County on Route 623. The county says the corridor improvements are meant to reduce congestion and enhance safe travel while supporting developing businesses and making access easier for residents and visitors.

At 2022 Ashland Road, Amazon is building an e-commerce fulfillment center serving Goochland, Richmond and surrounding areas. The frontage work there is fully funded by Amazon and includes a new entrance road, widened roadway at the entrance, a stop light, and relocation of the Luck Stone entrance to line up with the Project Rocky entrance. County project timelines list construction as beginning in March 2025 and expected to finish in April 2026.

Goochland County is also working to widen Ashland Road from the interchange project to the Amazon facility, expanding it from two lanes to four. Farther north, VDOT’s planned Interstate 64 and Route 623 project would reconstruct the interchange as a diverging diamond interchange, add a new bridge over I-64, widen and rebuild four ramps, and move the Bennington Road intersection about 675 feet north. That project is still in design, with an estimated start in fall 2026 and completion in summer 2029.

“We’re committed to balancing progress with the needs of our community,” said Goochland County Director of Economic Development Sara Worley. The road work comes as the county continues adjusting to Amazon’s arrival, which Governor Glenn Youngkin highlighted in May 2025 when he announced the company’s fourth Virginia robotics fulfillment center in Goochland County, RIC6, would create more than 1,000 jobs.
