Kōloa parade triggers temporary road closures, police warn motorists

Drivers in Kōloa will face temporary road closures Saturday, July 25, as the annual Historic Kōloa Plantation Days Parade moves through town. The Kauai Police Department said officers will be posted at key intersections and other strategic locations to manage traffic and keep the parade route clear and safe.

The county’s July 17 advisory said the closure at Maluhia Road will remain under KPD coverage until 5 p.m., when a private security company will take over that location. Kauai Now also noted on July 19 that several temporary road closures were planned for the parade.

The short-term disruption matters well beyond the parade route. Even a few hours of restricted access can slow errands, work commutes, deliveries and visitor traffic across Kōloa and the South Shore, especially for people trying to move between town, Poipū and nearby business areas. Police said drivers should expect delays, and pedestrians should stay alert around the route as parade traffic mixes with vehicles moving through the area.

Kōloa Plantation Days is a multi-day festival held each July on Kauai’s south shore in Kōloa and Poipū, and it commemorates the founding of Hawaii’s first successful sugar plantation in Kōloa in 1835. Go Hawaii says the Historic Parade includes floats, horses, walking units, classic cars and community groups, turning the route into one of the busiest public traffic events of the year in the district.

Festival listings place the 2026 run from July 17 to July 26. Go Hawaii says the Park Celebration opens at 2 p.m. Saturday, and Kauai Festivals and Events lists the parade and park event from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. as the 41st annual parade and park event. For anyone planning to cross Kōloa on Saturday, the safest move is to build in extra time and expect traffic control around the parade route.
